Welcome to Timberville
One tale of the beginning of Timberville reaches back to 1817, when John Zigler built his log house on the west bank of the river. Upon the year of his arrival, Zigler opened a tannery, which grew to be the largest in the county by his death in 1856. In 1820, Thomas Shull opened a blacksmith shop where B. F. Crist's presently stands. During 1830, John Zigler started a pottery shop and operated a hemp mill. The earliest mill was opened before 1820 by Abraham Williamson, when the area was call Williamsport.

Another tale says that the founder of Timberville is W. G. Thompson, who was a prominent resident in 1833. In that year, Thompson, Zigler and some other people were trying to create a free bridge across the river. At this time, the place was called Thompson's Store. During 1837, Thompson built the house that is now or has recently been owned by Charles Fahrney. Around 1850, Timberville was known as Riddle's Tavern, but in 1884, Timberville was incorporated. The early settlers of Timberville were mostly immigrants from Pennsylvania composed of German natives. In 1827, a post office was established. The large forest of trees north of town suggested the name, Timberville, and that name lasted. The Town of Timberville was chartered on February 21, 1894, its size, approximately 126 acres. Through annexation the town has grown to 553 acres. To preserve local history and make it accessible to residents of the Sixth (Plains) District, the Plains District Memorial Museum has been established behind the town office on Co-op Drive. The town is home to the Timberville Volunteer Fire Department, civic organizations, restaurants, various churches, and it has a strong business core that includes the Rockingham Cooperative for farmers.
