Broadway

Welcome To Broadway

The town of Broadway was strategically situated at the junction of Linville Creek, the North Shenandoah River, and at the mouth of Brock's Gap for trading. In 1808, the Custers started a mill in Broadway and also operated a store. Sheridan burned the mill in 1864, and during the reconstruction, brick period buildings were created on the site for machine shops.

There are different variations as to how Broadway was named. One is that the name was adopted from a habit of some merry daredeveils, who assembled at the place for carousals, who referred to themselves as on the "broad way to hell" during the time of prohibition. The people called Broadway that because of all the moonshine and parties that were in the area. In March of 1880, Broadway was incorporated.
